==== 1. find out the kernel version: ====


Debian-Etch#: uname -a
As a result you will get something like this (numbers may vary depending on the system):

The numbers at the end are needed for point 3.

==== 2. installation of the required packages ====

<code bash>apt-get -y install gcc make zip unzip psmisc libglib2.0-0</code>

==== 3. installing the kernel headers and kernel sources ====

And here we enter the numbers from point 1.

<code bash>apt-get -y install linux-headers-2.6.18-4-686 linux-source-2.6.18</code>

==== 4. mounting and copying the VMWare tools ====

Mount virtual CD drive, copy and unmount files:

mount /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom/
cd /mnt/cdrom
cp /mnt/cdrom/VMWareTools-5.5.3-...tar.gz /usr/src/
umount /mnt/cdrom

==== 5. unpack and install the VMWare tools ====

cd /usr/src
tar xfvz VMWareTools-5.5.3-...tar.gz <-- (zahl je nach Versionsstand)
cd vmware-tools-distrib
./vmware-install.pl

When the installation starts, confirm all questions by pressing ENTER.
